A STORYTELLING LEGEND

James Hazlerig, MA
Master Storyteller
Certified Hypnosis Practitioner

I grew up hearing my father tell stories—legends of our ancestors, accounts of his childhood as a migrant laborer in the Depression, folk-tales from around the world, great stories of heroes from history and literature. My mother matched him story-for-story, especially recounting her use of hypnosis to nullify the pain of childbirth not once, but four times.

As a result of this upbringing, I took to storytelling like a fish to water: First, as a champion bard in medieval re-enactment, then as a writer and graduate student of literature, next as a professional performer and musician, and finally as a changeworker.

In addition to using hypnotic storytelling to help my individual clients quit smoking, release fear, manage stress, and live happier lives, I’ve used storytelling as an important part of my group work:

Along the way I’ve edited a number of books on hypnosis and written a few as well. In 2014, I co-authored (with international hypnosis trainer Richard Nongard) Speak Ericksonian: Mastering the Hypnotic Methods of Milton Erickson. In 2016, I released The Little Book of Laughnosis: Using the Hypnotic Power of Unconditional Laughter to Change Lives, in addition to being featured in Igor Ledochowski’s Hypnotic Masters Series. In 2017, I presented on storytelling at multiple conferences and founded The Order of Spellbinding Storytellers.

SPECIALIZED HYPNOSIS TRAINING:

Storytelling in Hypnosis

What makes a story hypnotic?

Let me count the ways. (It’s three actually.)

First, your story is hypnotic because it’s a story. All tales activate the imagination.
Every story you tell bypasses the critical faculty, whether you use The Four-Word Induction or not.

When you listen to story, you become absorbed in the experience.
You’ve probably been so caught up in a story that you were “mesmerized” or even “spellbound.”
Of course, “spellbound” just means “made cataleptic by a story.”

Every story is about change.
When you tell your clients stories, they enter a mental landscape where it becomes possible to solve their problems.
Storytelling produces change, even while your client’s eyes are open.

Second, stories give you a framework for conversational hypnosis and embedded suggestions.
You might have found, as I did, that Ericksonian language patterns can sound awkward in everyday conversation.
But you can do what I do—and what Erickson did: Embed suggestions in your stories.

Third, when you learn advanced hypnotic storytelling,
you can use Nested Loops to induce and deepen trance.
You’ll tell stories within stories to tie up the conscious mind with suspense.
Your clients will be spellbound.
